Description
Year | 2021 |
País | Portugal |
Region | Douro |
Classification | Doc Douro |
Location | Quinta de São Xisto |
Soil | Shale with low production potential and steep slopes. |
Grape varieties | Touriga Nacional and Franca predominate, combined with other traditional grape varieties from the region. |
Viticultural Year | The 2020/21 wine-growing year was characterised by some fluctuations in temperature and annual rainfall compared to the historical figure, and is considered a normal, dry year. |
Enologist | Jorge Coutinho |
Vinification | The grapes are harvested into 20kg boxes and received at the winery (High Score). Manual sorting and destemming is followed by crushing in a granite press with traditional treading, maceration and alcoholic fermentation between the press and stainless steel vats. |
Maturation | After fermentation, in granite mills with foot treading and temperature control, maturation takes place over 12 months in a blend of stainless steel vats and French oak barrels. |
Keep | After bottling, it must age for 2 months in the bottle to be fully enjoyed, with the certainty that it will benefit from maturing in the bottle, keeping all its characteristics intact for at least 10 years. |
Drinking | Serve at 16°-18°, ideal with more intense dishes, meats and cheeses. |
Tasting Notes | Ruby in colour. On the nose, wild, red and black fruit, real forest fruit, with shrubby notes. On the palate, there's a high altitude freshness, polished tannins and a slight woodiness, very well integrated. A high ageing potential can be seen. |
Technical Sheet | 14% alcohol, 5.0 g/dm3 total acidity, 0.9 g/dm3 total sugar and 85 kcal/100ml calorific value. |
Winery | Maria Virginia Costa Almeida |

What a surprising wine. Complex flavours, with notes of red fruit perhaps in the form of jam. It's a vigorous wine that will live for years and will gain and strengthen its complexity over the course of the first 5 or 10 years. The truth is that it shouldn't come as a surprise. The raw materials come from vineyards that have already produced some of the Douro's best wines, and the winery was run by an oenologist with proven track records in some of the ex-libris of Portuguese "vinology"... MVCA and Jorge Coutinho joined forces at a good time. My Christmas choice is already made. Unbeatable value for money.

D. Cremilde is the most balanced wine I've drunk recently. It's full-bodied but smooth. An aroma and texture that complement its strong flavour. For me, it's already a benchmark for Douro wines.
HS –
Very well-balanced wine, well-defined fruit on the nose, good persistence, well supported by the acidity of high altitude winemaking, excellent value for money.

I had the pleasure of tasting a Douro 2021 red wine, from the Alto Douro region in Portugal, and I was impressed. The intense ruby colour immediately foreshadows a promising experience. The aroma is floral and fruity, revealing notes of ripe cherries and violets. It's clearly a jewel among the Douro 2021 wines. An experience I will remember and recommend to all lovers of quality mature wines.
